Jewellery Design Workshop: Series I
Due to popular requests that I conduct workshops on jewellery making and design, I'm finally starting these now!
I plan to have 2 series:
Series I deal with basic handmade jewellery techniques and simple design concepts.
Series II deal with the finer points of design including how to get ideas, adapting ideas from other inspirations and combining techniques to create signature pieces that are part of your personal style. (Details available soon)
The whole point of the workshops is to enable you to make your own jewellery: pieces that reflect your unique personality and that are one-of-a-kind. The techniques we learn are not difficult and do not necessarily require many tools nor expensive materials. What makes the difference really is the knowledge of what constitutes good design: we develop an eye for detail, an appreciation for art, and a knack for making the most of what we have got.
So say "NO!" to brain-dead, factory made design from today and come for the workshops to discover your own creativity.
Jewellery Design Workshop Series I:
Session 1: Making bracelets
We look at different ways to brace: charm bracelets, bangles, cuffs, etc. We will explore simple beading and finishing techniques, beading with elastic thread, wire, making chains, etc. Experience instant gratification with fast methods of creating interest in your bracelet, making a blah bracelet into a conversation piece.
Session 2: Making necklaces
We see how to incorporate mundane and unexpected materials into a stunningly unique work. With a few simple techniques and with some practice, the possibilities are endless! The only thing here is that you need to learn how to understand COMPOSITION in design: colour, proportion, detail, texture, movement. With clever design, even simple humble plastic beads and inexpensive metal parts can be made into something stunning and unique. As IKEA ad says: You don't have to be rich to be clever. hahaha
Session 3: Making earrings
Again, there are endless possibilities here even when you've learnt some simple wire techniques. There is an opportunity to learn about designing in 3D here. I think the problem with a lot of earring designs and even necklace designs out there (even in "fine jewellery stores") is that they are very FLAT, i.e. 2D. You need to design these as though they are hanging sculptures -- stunning when viewed from all directions, create movement. . . So we can learn about art appreciation at the same time.
Session 4: Making rings
I always feel that rings are an exercise in keeping things simple. . . and designing smart: a lot more can be achieved in simple elegant design than in making things complicated. Something zen about this! Also as we do alot with our hands, you are forced to design something safe (does not scratch yourself nor your dress!) and strong against wear and tear. I created my own way of making certain metal rings without using complicated tools or soldering. You can add on beads for endless design possibilities. We will also explore other methods of making rings with simplicity and character.
